Sharing Information about Animals

Third graders in Ms. Diaz De Leon's dual language class worked in pairs to learn about specific insects. This project covered language arts, science, and technology TEKS.

Students used online resources, like PebbleGo and World Book's World of Animals, along with books, to answer specific questions about their insects. They used Microsoft Word to create reports about their insects, which are posted outside their classroom. The sources the students used are cited in the report, so they are also learning about being responsible digital citizens.

Here are a few of the students' reports:

Amazing Dragonflies

Beautiful Butterflies

Fascinating Walking Sticks

Using Encyclopedia Britannica Online

Using Encyclopedia Britannica Online to Learn about Presidents

Librarian Kim Miller taught second graders the basics of research when they used Encyclopedia Britannica Online to gather information about U.S. Presidents. Each student located basic information about a president, including birth dates, death dates, home states, and significant accomplishments. This online resource includes text, illustrations, timelines, and sometimes video for the presidents.

Dimitri, in Ms. Pearson's class, researches the eighth president, Martin Van Buren.

When the research is completed, students will create pages about their presidents, which teachers will collect into a class book.

This lesson covers several second grade TEKS:

  • Social Studies: (2.4) History. The student understands how historical figures, patriots, and good citizens helped shape the community, state, and nation.
  • Language Arts: (2.25) Research/Gathering Sources. Students determine, locate, and explore the full range of relevant sources addressing a research question and systematically record the information they gather.
  • Technology:  (126.2(b)5) Information acquisition. The student acquires electronic information in a variety of formats, with appropriate supervision. The student is expected to (A) acquire information, including text, audio, video, and graphics.
