Showcase Teacher: Amy Bird

Mrs. Bird is a Kindergarten teacher at Herrington Elementary. This is her second year as part of the Kinder Teaching Team at Herrington. Mrs. Bird is excited about using technology with her students. She does her best to develop lessons that integrate this valuable tool.

Here are just a few of the ways that she uses technology:

  • Music
  • Videos
  • Document camera and classroom projection system
  • Various online resources for understanding, reinforcement of concepts, activities, and enrichment
One of her favorite lessons that she likes to do with her students that integrates computers is a writers workshop using Microsoft Word.

What is the one instructional technology that you feel you could no longer do without?

If wishes could come true, what technology would you want to have available in your classroom to enhance instruction?

Her thoughts on using technology in instruction:
"I use it in everything; readers workshop, writers workshop, math, science, and phonics."

Kinder is logging on!

Learning to log in to a network using a personal username and password can be difficult for folks at any age. Over a couple of weeks, Kindergarten classes had the opportunity to work with Ms. Freeman to learn how to log on to our school netbooks. Students learned about the keyboard combination of ctrl-alt-delete, how to use the touch pad, what 'click' means, and the location of the letters and numbers on the keyboard. Did you know that the zero is in the wrong place? Ask a Kindergartner to explain!

The students did a great job being patient with themselves while learning these new concepts. I'm excited about the projects and lessons that the Kinder Teaching Team has planned and looking forward to being involved in more lessons with them!
